Purpose
Federal guidelines stipulate that most Federally-funded research programs should include some level of committed faculty (or senior researcher’s) effort, regardless of whether or not they are paid from the grant. This policy has being developed to meet these guidelines.
Policy
The Office of the Vice President for Research will require that a minimum level of effort be proposed for all sponsored projects. This minimum should be at least 1% and be consistent with the individual’s contribution/involvement with the proposed scope of work. This requirement does not apply to awards that require little or no time on behalf of the PI; these include awards for major research instrumentation, equipment, dissertation or training support, or fellowships.
Procedures
All proposals must include a minimum of 1% commitment by the PI to the project. Faculty who do not propose a minimum level of effort must provide the reason(s) at the time the proposal is submitted to SPS.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Executive Director of Sponsored Programs Services will have overall responsibility for this policy and will review it annually. Any questions relating to this policy should be directed to him/her.
This policy is effective March1, 2013.
