The Laboratory Safety Committee (LSC) oversees the laboratory health and safety program, which is administered by the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). The LSC develops and reviews policies centered on the Chemical Hygiene Plan, that help: 1) ensure a safer working environment within laboratories, 2) maintain compliance with US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP), and CT Occupational Safety and Health Administration (CT OSHA) regulations along with all other applicable Federal and State regulations and University policies, and 3) advocate for programmatic laboratory safety improvements to University Administration.
The Laboratory Safety Committee members are appointed by University Administration and include members of faculty, research staff, administration, and EHS representatives. Members are appointed for three-year term and may be reappointed. The Chairperson is elected by a majority of the Committee members for a three-year term. The LSC meets quarterly to review laboratory safety and hazardous chemical waste issues at the University, including the Regional Campuses. The Committee may be called on to review protocols in which extremely hazardous chemicals are proposed to be used, which may present a high risk environment from either or both a toxic or physical hazard.
